  • Artwork Information:

    • Believed to have been painted around 1665 by a famous Dutch painter Johannes Vermeer, the image depicts a European girl wearing an exotic dress, an oriental turban, and what appears to be a very large pearl as an earring. Many actually raises doubt about the material of the earring, saying it seems more like a piece of polished tin due to its large size, but the painting is known as "Girl with a Pearl Earring" all over the world. 
    • After the most recent restoration of the painting in 1994, the subtle color scheme and the contrast between the girl and the background have been significantly improved, giving much more intimacy to the girl's gaze toward the viewer.  During the restoration, it was discovered that the dark background was originally a deep enamel-like green, with a thin transparent layer of enamel paint over the black background that can be seen now. 
      Artwork was also featured in the 2003 film Girl with a Pearl Earring with Scarlett Johansson portraying the Girl!
